Passionate infatuation

105 passages

The Cure’s summary

Passionate infatuation is the subject of the book's long final part, which grows out of its discussion of love. Ibn al-Qayyim describes the infatuated person's heart as a captive in the grip of the one he loves, too intoxicated to feel his own ruin (A493-2), and warns that at its worst such love becomes a form of shirk, whose sign is putting the pleasure of the beloved before the pleasure of one's Lord (A488-5, A490-1). He does not condemn every such love: he names a man's passionate love for his wife as beneficial, even a means of drawing near to Allah (A565-3). Among its cures he points to a love the person holds dearer, so that the fear of losing it overcomes the infatuation (A507-3).

Written for The Cure and checked against the Arabic — not Ibn al-Qayyim’s words. Each claim rests on A493-2, A488-5, A490-1, A565-3, A507-3.
