Ibn al-Qayyim’s text — in the voice of Iblīs addressing his troops
A literary device. In this part of the book Ibn al-Qayyim writes a speech in which Iblīs instructs his troops how to attack the human heart. These are Ibn al-Qayyim’s words, spoken as the devil — read them as a warning about how the enemy works, not as advice. Where the section begins.
وقد أوصاهم الله أن يستعينوا عليكم بالصبر والصلاة؛ فَحُولُوا ينهم وبين ذلك وأَنُسُوهم إياه. واستعينوا عليهم بالشهوة والغضب: وأبلغ أسلحتكم فيهم وأنكاها: الغفلةً» وانّباع الهوى. وأعظمُ أسلحتهم فيكم وأمنع حصونهم: ذكرٌ الله ومخالفة الهوى. فإذا رأيتم الرجل مخالقًا لهواه» فاهربوا من ظلّه؛ ولا تدنُوا منه.

والمقصود أن الذنوب والمعاصى سلاح ومددٌ يمد بها العبد أعداءف ويعينهم بها على نفسه » فيقاتلونه بسلاحه: ويكون معهم على نفسه. وهذا غاية الجهل» و ما يبلغ الأعداء؛ من جاهلٍ ما يبلغ الجاهلٌ من نفسه؟
