Ibn al-Qayyim’s text — in the voice of Iblīs addressing his troops
A literary device. In this part of the book Ibn al-Qayyim writes a speech in which Iblīs instructs his troops how to attack the human heart. These are Ibn al-Qayyim’s words, spoken as the devil — read them as a warning about how the enemy works, not as advice. Where the section begins.
فلا تهملوا أمر هذا الثغرء وأفسدوه بحسب استطاعتكم» وهوؤّنوا عليه أمرّه؛ وقولوا له: ما مقدار نظرةٍ تدعوك إلى تسبيح الخالق» والتأمّل لبديع صنعته وحسن هذه الصورة التي إنّما خُلِقَتْ ليستدلٌ بها الناظرٌ عليه؟ وما خلق الله لك العينين سدئّ» وما خلق هذه الصورة ليحجّبها عن النظر

ثم امنعوا ثغر الأذن أن يدخل منه ما يُفسد عليكم الأمرّ» فاجتهدوا أن لا تدخلواا منه إلا الباطل» فإنّه خفيف على النفس تستحليه وتستملحه 6 وتخيّروا؟ له أعذب الألفاظ وأسحرّها للألباب 6 وامزجوه بما تهوى النفوس مزجا. وألقّوا الكلمة» فإنْ رأيتم منه إصغاءً إليها فرُجُوه بأخواتها. وكلّما صادفتم منه استحسان شيء فالْهّجُوا له بذكره.
