Ibn al-Qayyim’s text — in the voice of Iblīs addressing his troops
A literary device. In this part of the book Ibn al-Qayyim writes a speech in which Iblīs instructs his troops how to attack the human heart. These are Ibn al-Qayyim’s words, spoken as the devil — read them as a warning about how the enemy works, not as advice. Where the section begins.
فإذا خامرث على القلب» وصارت معكم عليه» ملكتم ثغْرّ العين والأذن واللسان والفم واليد والرجل» فرابطوا على هذه الثغور كل المرابطة. فمتى دخلتم منها إلى القلب فهو قتيل أو أسير أو جريح مثحّن بالجراحات. ولا تُخلوا هذه الثغور» ولا تمكّنوا سريّةٌ تدخل منها إلى القلب» فتُخرجّكم منها. وإن غُلبتم فاجتهدوا في إضعاف السريّة ووَمَِّها حتى لا تصل إلى القلب» وإِنْ وصلث إليه ضعيفة لا تغني عنه شيئً.

فإذا استوليتم على هذه الثغور فامنعوا ثغرّ العين أن يكون نظره اعتبارا» بل اجعلوا نظره تفرّجًا واستحسانًا وتلهُيًا. فإنْ استرق نظرة عبرة فأفسدوها عليه بنظر الغفلة والاستحسان والشهوة» فإنّه أقرب إليه؛ وأعلق بنفسه» وأخف عليه. ودونكم ثغر العين» فإنَ منه تنالون بغيتكم» فإتي ما أفسدث بني آدم بشيء مثل النظرء فإنّي أبذر به في القلب بََذْرَ الشهوة» ثم أسقيه بماء الأمنية؛ ثم لا أزال أعذه وأمنّيه حتى أقوّي عزيمته» وأقوده [1/48] بزمام الشهوة إلى الانخلاع من العصمة.
