The Cure’s summary

For Ibn al-Qayyim, passing thoughts are where good and evil begin: from them grow wishes, aspirations and resolutions, so whoever guards them governs himself (A353-4). A thought merely passing through does no harm; the harm lies in inviting it and conversing with it (A360-1). His remedy is not a heart emptied of all thoughts — an empty heart, he says, the devil finds and fills (A361-4) — but one filled with thoughts of what pleases Allah (A362-1). He likens the heart to a tablet on which thoughts are engraved: beneficial thoughts settle in it only once the worthless ones are cleared away (A361-2).

Ibn al-Qayyim’s text

Ibn al-Qayyim’s text

Arabic ed. p. 361 ·

English reference translation · short quotation

So the heart is an empty tablet and one’s thoughts are carvings that are carved on it, so how can it befit someone with sound intellect to produce their carvings from either lies, deception, trickery, fake aspirations and a mirage …
