The glance is the first of four gateways through which, Ibn al-Qayyim says, most sins reach a person: glances, passing thoughts, words and steps (A347-3, A348-1). He traces how a glance produces a thought, the thought an idea, the idea a desire, and the desire a will that strengthens into firm resolve, so that the act follows unless something prevents it (A350-2), and cites the narration describing the glance as a poisoned arrow of Iblīs (A348-4). Later, lowering the gaze is the first of two measures he gives for preventing passionate infatuation from taking hold, and he sets out its benefits for the heart (A415-6, A416-1).

وفي المسند عنه كيّةٍ: «النظرة سهم مسموم من سهام إبليس؛ فمن غضٌ بصره عن محاسن امرأة لله أورث الله قلبه؟ حلاوة إلى يوم يلقاه». هذا معنى الحديث.

وأمر تعالى نبيّه كَل أن يأمر المؤمنين بغضٌ أبصارهم وحفظ فروجهم» وأن يُعلِمَهم أنه مشاهد لأعمالهم» مطلع عليها. « يَعْلَمُ حَآبَِةٌ الْأَحَيِنِ وما تُخْنى الصّدُومٌ )6 [غافر/ 14]. ولمًا كان مبدأ ذلك من قبل البصر جعل الأمرّ بغضه مقدمًا على حفظ الفرج» فإنٌ الحوادث مبداها من النظر» كما أنّ معظم النار من مستصغر الشرر. فتكون نظرة» ثم خطرة؛ ثم خطوة» ثم خطيئة.

الثالثة: أنّه يورث القلب أنسًا بالله وجمعية على الله» فإنّ إطلاق البصر يفرّق القلب ويشتّته 1 ويعده من الله. وليس على العبد شىء أضرٌ من إطلاق البصر» فإنّه يوقع الوحشة بين العبد وبين ربه.

أحدهما: غض البصر؟ » كما تقدّم 6 فَإنَ النظرة سهم مسموم من سهام إبليس. ومن أطلق لحظاتّه دامت حسراته. وفي غضٌ البصر عدّة منافع» وهو بعض أجزاء هذا الدواء النافع.
