والرغبات تستر العيوب» فالراغب في الشيء لا يرى عيوبه حتى إذا زالت رغبته فيه أبصر عيوبه. فشدّة الرغبة غشاوة على العين تمنع من رؤية الشىء على ما هو به»؛ كما قيل:

والداخل في الشيء لا يرى عيوبه» والخارج منه الذي لم يدخل فيه لاايرى عيوبه. ولا يرى عيوبه إلا من دخل فيه ثم خرج منه. ولهذا كان الصحابة الذين دخلوا في الإسلام بعد الكفر خيرًا من الذين ولدوا في الإسلام. قال عمر بن الخطاب: إنّما تنقّض عُرى الإسلام عروة عروة إذا وُلِد في الإسلام من لم يعرف الجاهلية.
