وهذا شأن من قصَرّ نظره على العاجل» ولم يلاحظ العواقب. وخاضَّةٌ العقل: النظر في العواقب» فأعقَّلُ الناس من آثر لذته وراحته الأجلة الدائمة على العاجلة المنقضية الزائلة؛ وأسفهٌ الخلت من باع نعيم الأبد وطيب الحياة الدائمة واللذة العظمى التي لا تنغيص فيها ولا نقص بوجدٍ ماء بلذّة منخّصة مشوبة بالآلام والمخاوف» وهي سريعة الزوال؟ وشيكة الانقضاء.

قال بعض العلماء: فكرثُ فيما يسعى فيه العقلاء» فرأيتُ سعيهم كله في مطلوب واحدء وإن اختلفت طرقهم في تحصيله؛ رأيتهم جميعهم إنّما يسعون في دفع الهمّ والغمّ عن نفوسهم. فهذا بالأكل والشرب» وهذا بالتجارة والكسب» وهذا بالنكاح» وهذا بسماع الغناء والأصوات المطربة» وهذا باللهو واللعب. فقلتُ: هذا المطلوب مطلوب العقلاء» ولكن الطرق كلِّها غير 4/ب] موصلة إليه»؛ بل لعل أكثرها إنّما يوصل إلى ضدّه. ولم أر في جميع هذه الطرق طريقًا موصلة إلا الإقبال على الله ومعاملته وحده» وإيثار مرضاته على كل شيء.
