Ibn al-Qayyim’s text — in the voice of Iblīs addressing his troops
A literary device. In this part of the book Ibn al-Qayyim writes a speech in which Iblīs instructs his troops how to attack the human heart. These are Ibn al-Qayyim’s words, spoken as the devil — read them as a warning about how the enemy works, not as advice. Where the section begins.
وبالجملة فأعِدّوا للأمور أقرانّهاء وادخلوا على كل واحد من بني آدم من باب إرادته وشهوته» فساعدوه عليهاء وكونوا عونًا له على تحصيلها. وإذا كان الله قد أمرهم أن يصبروا لكم» ويصابروكم؛ ويرابطوا عليكم الثغور؛ فاصبروا أنتم» وصابرواء ورابطوا عليهم الثغور» وانتهزوا فرصكم فيهم عند الشهوة والغضب» فلا تصطادون؟ بني آدم في أعظم من هذين الموطنين

واعلموا أن منهم من يكون سلطان الشهوة عليه أغلب» وسلطان غضبه ضعيف مقهورء فخذوا عليه طريق الشهوة. ودَعُوا طريق الغضب. ومنهم من يكون سلطان الغضب عليه أغلب» فلا تُخْلُوا طريقّ الشهوة عليه» ولاتعطّلوا ثغرّها. فإنَ من لم يملك نفسه عند الغضب فإنه بالحرى أن لا يملكها عند الشهوة. فزوّجوا بين غضبه وشهوته» وامزجوا أحدهما بالآخر» وادعوه إلى الشهوة [50/ب] من باب الغضب» وإلى الغضب من طريق الشهوة.

واعلموا أنه ليس لكم في بني آدم سلاح أبلغ من هذين السلاحين. وإنما أخرجث أبويهم من الجنّة بالشهوة» وإنما ألقيث العداوة بين أولادهم بالغضب ٠ فبه قطعت أرحامّهم 1 وسفكتٌُ دماءهم 6 وبه قتل أحد ابتى آدم أخاه.
