وسرّ المسألة أنَّ الطاعة تُوجب القرب من الربة» وكلما اشتد القرب قوي الأنس؛ والمعصية توجب البعدّ من الربة؛ وكلما ازداد البعد قويت الوحشة. ولهذا يجد العبد وحشة بينه وبين عدوّه للبعد الذي بينهماء وإن كان ملابسًا له قريبًا منه؛ ويجد أنسًا قربا بينه وبين من يحبّ» وإن كان بعيدًا عنه.

والوحشة سببها الحجاب» وكلّما غلظ الحجاب زادت الوحشة. فالغفلة توجب الوحشة»؛ وأشدٌ منها وحشةٌ المعصية؛ وأشدٌ منها وحشة الشرك والكفر. ولا تجد أحدًا يلابس شيئًا من ذلك إلا ويعلوه من الوحشة بحسب ما لابَسَّه منه» فتعلو الوحشة وجهّه وقلبَّه؛ فيستوحش ويُستوحَش منه.
