وفي اللسان آفتان عظيمتان» إن 8:1/ب] خلص من إحداهما لم يخلص من الأخرى: آفة الكلام» وآفة السكوت. وقد يكون كل منهما أعظم إثمًا من الأخرى في وقتها. فالساكت عن الحقّ شيطان أخرس عاص لله مُراءٍ مداهنٌ إذا لم يخف على نفسه. والمتكلّم بالباطل شيطان ناطق عاص لله. وأكثر الخلق منحرف في كلامه وسكوته؛ فهم بين هذين النوعين.

وإنَّ العبد لياتي يوم القيامة بحسناتٍ أمثالٍ الجبال» فيجد لسانه قد هدمها عليه كلّها؛ ويأتى بسيئات أمثال الجبال» فيجد لسانه قد هدمها من كثرة ذكر الله وما اتصل به.

وأما الخطوات: » فحفظها بأن لا ينقل قدمه إلا فيما يرجو ثوابه؛ فإن لم يكن في تخطاه مزيدٌ ثواب»؛ فالقعود عنها خير له. ويمكنه أن يستخرج من كلّ مباح يخطو إليه قربةٌ ينويها لله؛ فتقع خطاه قربة.
