Ibn al-Qayyim’s text — in the voice of Iblīs addressing his troops

واعلموا أنّ أكبر عونكم على لزوم هذه الثغور مصالحة النفس الأمّارة. فأعينوها واستعينوا بهاء وأمدّوها واستمدّوا منها. وكونوا معها على حرب النفس المطمئنة» فاجتهدوا في كشرها وإبطالٍ قواهاا» ولا سبيل إلى ذلك إلا بقطع موادّها عنها. فإذاً انقطعت موادّهاء وقويت مواد النفس الأمّارة؛ وأطاعت لكم أعوالهاء فاستنزلُوا القلبّ من حصنه؛ واعزلوه عن مملكته؛ وولُوا مكانه النفس. فإنّها لا تأمر إلا بما تهوونه وتحبّونه ولا تجيئكم بما تكرهونه البتة؛ مع أنّها لا تخالفكم في شيء تشيرون به عليهاء بل إذا أشرتم عليها بشيء بادرّت إلى فعله.

فإن أحسستم من القلب منازعة إلى مملكته» وأردتم الأمنّ من ذلك» فاعقدوا بينه وبين النفس عقدّ النكاح» فزيّنوهاء وجمّلوها؛ وأروها إياه في أحسن صورة عروس توجدء وقولوا له: ذقٌّ طعم هذا الوصال والتمتّع بهذه العروس » كما ذقت [1/50] طعم الحرب: وباشرت مرارة الطعن والضرب. ثم وازْنُ بين لذة هذه المسالمة ومرارة تلك المحاربة 6 فدع الحرب تضع أوزارها 1 فليست بيوم وينقضى؛ وإنما هو حرب متصل بالموت 6 وقواك تضعف عن حراب دائم 0:
