والوحشة سببها الحجاب» وكلّما غلظ الحجاب زادت الوحشة. فالغفلة توجب الوحشة»؛ وأشدٌ منها وحشةٌ المعصية؛ وأشدٌ منها وحشة الشرك والكفر. ولا تجد أحدًا يلابس شيئًا من ذلك إلا ويعلوه من الوحشة بحسب ما لابَسَّه منه» فتعلو الوحشة وجهّه وقلبَّه؛ فيستوحش ويُستوحَش منه.

ومن عقوباتها: أنها تُوقَعُ الوحشة العظيمة في القلب» [1/30] فيجد المذنب نفسّه مستوحشاء قد وقعت الوحشة بينه وبين ربّه» وبينه وبين الخلق» وبينه وبين نفسه. وكلّما كثرت الذنوب اشتدّت الوحشة. وأمرٌ العيش عيش المستوحشين الخائفين» وأطيبٌ العيش عيش المستأنسين. فلو نظر العاقل» ووازن بين لذة المعصية وما تُوقعُه من الخوف والوحشة»؛ لَعلِمَ سوءً حاله وعظيم غَبْنه؛ إذ باع أنس الطاعة وأمنها وحلاوتها بوحشة المعصية وما توجبه من الخوف. فإن كنت قد أوحشتك الذنوبة. فدَعْها إذا شتت واستأنس؟
