Love of praise and status

Briefly discussed · 7 passages

The Cure’s summary

The book does not give the love of praise a chapter of its own. Its closest treatment is Ibn al-Qayyim's account of shirk in worship: acting partly for one's own share, for this world, or to seek elevation, standing and rank among people (A301-5). He counts love of leadership among the ills from which the sound heart is free (A282-5). Among the punishments of sin he names the loss of standing with Allah and with people (A192-1) and being stripped of the names of praise (A193-2). He also cites a divine narration: every creature who loves you wants you for his own sake, while Allah wants you for yours (A536-3).

Written for The Cure and checked against the Arabic — not Ibn al-Qayyim’s words. Each claim rests on A301-5, A282-5, A192-1, A193-2, A536-3.

A minor theme in this book. Ad-Dāʾ wa-d-Dawāʾ touches on love of praise and status in only 7 passages. What follows is everything The Cure found; it is not a full treatment of the subject.
